The website "StockTwits" introduced this idea a few years ago to make stock symbols easy to spot in tweets. Twitter has picked up the idea (no, StockTwits isn't very pleased about this) and it can now be seen in regular tweets as well. Essentially, a "$" sign is prefixed to a stock symbol (such as "$GOOG"), which makes the symbol clickable, just like a #hashtag.
