Guidelines

Here's how you play:

• At the beginning of each month, we will announce a theme - the theme will be open-ended enough for you to write different kinds of questions.
• Unlike our guest contributions and this blog's major focus, your questions DO NOT have to be about current affairs. You are allowed to interpret the theme in anyway you like, but there should ideally be a strong connection to it.
  
• Our preference is for interesting questions, well-framed, creatively told, and about facts that will surprise even our jaded quizzing brains. Naturally, these are going to be a subjective choices, but we shall try and explain what we liked in a winning question.
• As with our guest contributions: zero tolerance for plagiarism.
• Use this form to submit your questions. If you have images or other media, please send a link or the file via email with the words "Q.IZ" in the subject line.
• Submissions will be open until the 25th of the month. We will announce winners by the end of the month.

And we have prizes! Typically in the form of gift cards to online bookstores, the prizes are sponsored by Choose To Thinq who believe that a question a day keeps your brain cells grey. Prizes will be for between 1 to 3 submissions.

Q.IZ Sept '14 ('Ice' or 'Bucket' edition)- Results

17 entries made up the line-up for the first Q.IZ contest, where we asked participants to send in questions on the theme of either "Ice" or "Bucket". Some interesting, some new, some funny, and some plain unrelated questions came our way.

Real Xs are able to conduct heat and are actually one of the best conductors of heat. Even as a X heats up, it is cool to the touch, much like ice. Once this ability was discovered, Xs were quickly identified as "ice" and heat conductivity quickly began to be a way to determine whether or not a X was real. What is X?

comment: we liked this question because this was a nice little fact that we didn't know before. It would have been better if the framing was not taken verbatim from its source, but we'll overlook it this time

This (photo from a) Ice-Bucket video still shows siblings Lucy, Tim and Robert taking up the challenge. In fact, they had 'volunteered' instead of their father who had earlier said: "Because I had pneumonia last year, it would not be wise for me to have a bucket of cold water poured over me."

1Z Quiz - Answers and Results

45 people entered the 1Z Day contest. First, the answers:

1. Anant Pai, who created the Amar Chitra Katha series of books (he passed away in 2011).
2. Hermann Kallenbach, a close friend of M.K.Gandhi (seated to the left), and subject of a controversy arising out of a book on the life of Gandhi this year.
3. Aron Ralston, whose harrowing exploits while canyoneering resulted in the self-amputation of his arm and inspired the film "127 Hours".
4. The Big Mac Index, which also included India this time.
5. South Sudan, the youngest nation on the planet.
6. Wael Ghonim, the Egyptian Google employee who became a visible face of the protests in that country.
7. Luka and the Fire of Life by Salman Rushdie.
8. Wenlock and Mandeville, the mascots for the 2012 London Olympics.
9. K. Balachander, the latest recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.
10. Benoit Mandelbrot, the famous French mathematician (the figure in the background is called the Mandelbrot Set).

And now for the results. 19 people turned in all-correct entries; after this tally, we added one more first prize in response. So the two winners (randomly chosen from the 19) are Swathi Rishi and Abhimanyu Sanghi, who win Rs. 200/- vouchers each. Congratulations to them (their Flipkart voucher prizes will be sent via email in a day).

The other prize was a random pick among everyone who got at least 3 answers right. This prize goes to Kunal Naik. He wins a Rs. 100/- voucher.

Thanks to everybody who participated - hopefully, we'll be running more such contests in the days to come.

100 days and a contest

Infinite Zounds completes 100 days today. It's a good time to look at what has happened here in those days:

* In total, there have been 102 questions on this blog because on two days, an extra bonus question was asked

* Entertainment (28), Sports (22), and Business (18) have been the top three categories of questions.

* There should probably be a category called "Obituaries"!

* Questions 6 and 73 seem to be the most answered questions

A Contest

To mark the occasion, here's a "make your own IZ question" contest for readers.

What to do: Submit a question based on recent events (anything in the last 6 months).
What we're looking for: The best framed, the zoundiest, the most interesting question. Be creative in the way you set the question. Find us a surprising fact. Don't be too obscure.
What we're offering: The best entry wins a voucher to an online bookstore. We'll also post the best few entries on this blog.
How to send it in: Mail infinitezounds [at] gmail with "IZ 100" in the subject line. Your question should be in plain text, between 100 to 300 characters. Images can be attached, but no word/ppt docs please. Include your name or a handle to identify you by. And don't forget the answer :-)
