The Americans have had this post for the last fifty years, beginning with Robert Cutler upto Tom Donilon, the current man playing the role. Brijesh Mishra (who passed away in September 2012) was the first to serve as this, when India instituted this in 1998. Shivshankar Menon is the incumbent.
