Samuel Zemurray, an American businessman owned the Cuyamel Fruit Company, and also took over the United Fruit Company in the 1930s. He bought lots of land in the Republic of Honduras for his business ventures (and probably didn't need any loans for it). He got involved in local politics and ended up aiding a coup that overthrew the liberal President of the day.

Honduras was a classic case of a banana republic, a type of country dependent on one predominant export that let it become vulnerable to foreign control and internal plutocracies.
