Enacted in 2004 in the American state of California, this statute came into force on July 1, 2012. As a result, Californians will not be able to make or sell this item of haute cuisine. This sparked a mad rush on the days before to have a bite.

Many such bans have come into place in other parts of the world, after years of protests against the obvious cruelty that the principal ingredient of the dish has to endure.
