Most people, especially in India, associate this piece of folklore with only two people; in fact, the story is referred to by the names of the duo. This is partly due to how the story was told in post-Persian empire times. In fact, the story is more of a love triangle, with King Khusrau being the third vertex.

So some versions of the story place Khusrau as the male protagonist with Irene of Armenia being the female lead. The sculptor that we know better enters the story later.
