In an interview Lennon confessed that the name of this song had been inspired from his son’s drawing.
His son once drew a girl and when John Lennon asked ‘Who is this?’ He replied ‘she is _________’ and thus the name stuck.

Lennon constantly denies any other sources or relations and emphasizes that song was also inspired by Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’.

Lennon's inspiration for the song came when his son, Julian, showed him a nursery school drawing he called ‘Lucy—in the Sky with Diamonds’ depicting his classmate Lucy O'Donnell.
