This documentary is based on the life of Aaron Swartz, a programmer and activist, who died in 2013. Swartz committed suicide after a likelihood of spending time in prison for an offence involving the alleged piracy of academic articles.

The film gets its name from a quote by Quinn Norton, a journalist who had dated Swartz, who said: "He was the _____'s own boy... and the old world killed him."
