He appeared in numerous Indian and British movies, including Gandhi, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, A Passage to India, Chashme Buddoor, My Beautiful Laundrette and many more. He also starred in critically acclaimed movie Shatranj ke Khiladi directed by Satyajit Ray. He was the first Indian to receive the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to drama.
